Shared note

Educated at Westminster School from January 1751; a Kings Scholar there in 1753. Elected to Christ Church, Oxford, in 1757; under the tutorship of Mr Smallwell matriculated there on 8 Jun 1757; a junior student there in 1758; summoned on 5 January 1759 to explain his absence, dismissed and left on 10 April 1759. Joined the army as a Cornet in the 2nd Dragoon Guards 9 May 1758, so would have been with them fighting in Germany 1760-1763 during the Seven Years War. Appointed Chaplain to the 17th Foot 12 Apr 1764 and remained so to 1779. Curate of Coulsdon, Surrey, 1764-1766. Chaplain to the 4th Duke of Gordon. Moved to Ireland. Curate of St.Ann's Dublin 1769-1773. Rector of Castlerahan, Co Cavan (D.Kilmore) 1770-1774. Rector of Knockbride, Co Cavan (D Kilmore) 1774-1775. Vicar of the Union of Manor Hamilton (Cloonclare, Cloonlogher and Killasnet), Co Leitrim (D Kilmore) 1775-1781. Rector of Killesher, Co Fermanagh (D Kilmore) 1781-1797. Rector of Derryloran, Cookstown, Co Tyrone (D Armagh) 1797-1816. Archdeacon of Kilmore Cathedral, Cavan, from 24 August 1776-1810. Rector and Prebendary of Devenish, Co Fermanagh (D Clogher) 8 July 1797-1816. His Will proved at Armagh in 1816. Resident at Castle Cosby, Co Cavan, in 1782. The parish of Killesher included Florence Court, seat of William Willoughby Cole, 1st Earl of Enniskillen. At his death he was described as "of Benown" and so may have been responsible for the building of the house there c1800.

According to Alumni Westmonienses also Rector of Killeshandra, Co Cavan (D Kilmore) dates unknown, possibly between 1770 and 1774.

The 17th Regiment was on service in America from 1757 to 1767, but it seems that John did not go to America following his appointment in 1764. Why is unclear, but the need for another job as Curate of Coulsdon is evident. The regiment returned in early 1767 and he may have resigned from Coulsdon to take up his duties as Chaplain whilst they were stationed at Wells and then Chatham. In 1770 the regiment was moved to Northumberland and this appears to be the year that John and his family moved to Ireland, as young John was born in Roscommon (probably at Donamon) that year.

Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon (1743-1827) was a Scottish Representative Peer from 1767, the year of his marriage to Jane Maxwell. Thereafter he seems to have resided mainly at Gordon Castle, Fochabers, where, presumably, John would have been required to be in attendance. The period of his Chaplainship is unclear, but the introduction was probably through is father’s Scottish connections, and probably from 1766 to 1769.
