Shared note

On the death of his mother, sent from Ceylon to live with his uncle Rev Charles. Left Colombo on 10th July 1855, arriving Creagh on 27th August. After a spell in Dublin they travelled to Nassau, Bahamas, in 1858, taking firstly to New York the last paddle steamer to make the Atlantic crossing. At New York they fortunately missed the boat to Nassau, which was wrecked. Bishop Charles then chartered the "Wild Pigeon" for the trip to Nassau. During the yellow fever epidemic of September 1862 the Bishop died, along with three of Henry's sisters. Immediately after this the remainder of the family left Nassau on 22nd September on the "Peterhoff" arriving at Queenstown (Cork) on 16th October and returning to Dublin. Subsequently educated at Mason's Grammar School, Denmark Hill, Camberwell, London. Next heard of in the early 1870s travelling to Ceylon on the clipper "River Indus" via Cape of Good Hope. In the Ceylon Directory for 1878 as a planter at the Holmwood Estate, Lindula. While living in Ceylon he organised the bringing of 500 Cingalese to work on the Bundaberg cane fields before immigrating with his wife and family to Bundaberg himself. Recorded leaving Ceylon on 10th May 1883 on the P&O steamer "Rome" reaching Sydney 31st May, then onward on the "SS Egmont" arriving Brisbane on 3rd June 1883. Their infant son Charles, four months old at the beginning of this trip, died a week later; their next son was also named Charles. He was employed in the Queensland Civil Service at Bundaberg, firstly as an Clerk in the Immigration Dept of Queensland, then was promoted to Inspector and Immigration Agent of Polynesian Labourers. Both Melanesian and European assessment of his work indicate that he understood the problems of his charges well. An historian commented, "He was zealous in his duties as an inspector of plantations, banking agent, and investigator of islanders' complaints against their employers." In 1909 this position was concluded and he then moved to Brisbane where he was attached to the Government Labour Bureau until his retirement. He was a member of the Church of England Parochial Council of St Augustine's Church, Hamilton. For some years he was president and secretary of the Church of England Defence Association.
