Educated at the Von Schultz Grammar School in Bundaberg. Entered employment with the Bank of New South Wales at Bundaberg in 1903, serving in various capacities in numerous Queensland towns and cities including Croydon, Georgetown, Townsville, Proserpine, Aramac, Cairns, Gin Gin and Cambooya, becoming Manager in 1916. On retirement purchased a home at 45 Amelia Street, Coorparoo, Brisbane, where he lived until his death.

Served faithfully, firstly in Anglican and then Methodist Churches, as a Local Preacher and Sunday School Superintendent. Served on many committees in a voluntary capacity. For many years Treasurer of the orphanage, Queen Alexandra and Margaret Marr Homes for Children, and the Methodist Church's Division of Children and Family Welfare named one of their family homes "Caulfeild" in honour of this work by him and his wife. Served as a board member of the Queensland Bible Institute 1950 - 1969; treasurer 1950 - 1964 and was Honorary Vice Chairman until his death. Also in honour of his work the original building of the Institute was renamed "Caulfeild House."
