Daughter of Richard Taverner, of Wood Eaton Manor near Oxford, and Margaret, daughter of Walter Lambert of Carshalton, Surrey. He subsequently married Mary, daughter of Sir John Harcourt, of Stanton-Harcourt, Oxon, and their daughter Penelope, who married Robery Petty, of Wood Eaton, died at Charlemont Fort in 1641.

Richard Taverner, a great Protestant Reformist and greek scholar, was educated at Corpus Christi, Cambridge; afterwards at Christ Church and Cardinal's College, Oxford; junior canon there. Son and heir of John, of North Elmham, Norfolk (and Alice dau of Robert Sylvester, Esq., of Norfolk). Born c1505, BA (Oxford) 1527. Incorp at Cambridge,l529. M.A. (Cambridge) I530. A member of Gonville Hall, I530-4; probably Fellow. Studied law in London; afterwards a student at the Inner Temple. Introduced at Court and taken under the especial patronage of Thomas Cromwell, I534. Clerk of the Signet, I534-53. Encouraged to produce works in support of the Reformation. His position endangered by the fall of Cromwell in 1540; imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1541 for slandering the Lady Anne of Cleve, but soon released and granted various estates. Purchased the Manor of Wood Eaton 1544. MP for Liverpool, 1545. Licensed to preach, though a layman, 1552. High Sheriff of Oxon, 1569, also J.P. Of Norbiton Hall, Surrey; afterwards removed to Woodeaton, Oxon. Author of many works including a translation of the Bible. An eccentric character of varied experience. Died July 14, I575. Buried at Woodeaton. Will proved (P.C.C.) Aug. 3, 1575. Brother of Roger and Silvester (1541) and probably half-brother of Thomas (1554). (Cooper." I. 338; Masters, 389; Venn, I. 28; AI.
