Shared note

The third surviving son of William 2nd Viscount. Educated by Mr Martin of Armagh; entered Trinity College Dublin on 8 February 1704/5; BA 1708; MA 1710. Rector of Tartaraghan 1711-27 (presented by Viscount Charlemont and installed 4th July 1711). Burgess of Charlemont 1714 (with his brothers Hon James and Hon John). Rector of Ardboe 1727-68 (installed 7th November 1727). Rector of Ballyclog 1727-42. Rector of Donaghendry 1742-68 (presented by John Houston (Died 1737!) and John Moore, both his brothers-in-law, and installed 15th December 1742).

Also Prebendary of Kilgobinet (Lismore) 1724-68 (by which he became a pluralist). This appointment may have related to his nephew James's friendship with Richard Marlay, Bishop of Waterford, with whom he had been on the Grand Tour.

A stone on the graveyard wall at Tartarghan states "C.C. 1712", the date the new church was started, and consecrated 25th September 1713. The communion plate there bears the inscription "gift of Rt Hon William Ld Viscount Charlemont to the parish of Tartaraghan, his Lordship being Patron thereof, and at the request of his Lordship's third son Rev Hon Charles Caulfeild, presented Easter Day April 20th 1712". In 1716 a glebe was purchased for Tartaraghan from Edward Bond, and presumably inhabited by Rev Charles. Having fallen into ruin after Charles' departure, the church was rebuilt as now seen in 1816.

Ardboe church was built c1709, and rebuilt c1815. Ballyclog old church was built c1622, in 1868 was replaced by a new building on a nearby site, and is now a picturesque ruin. Donaghendry church was built c1694, was much extended in 1810, suffered a catastrophic fire in 1877 and was refurbished as seen today.

It was common practice at the time for Rectors from wealthy families to be non-resident in their parishes and employ a Curate to act on their behalf. The Rector would receive an income of tithes and part of this would go to the Curate. This appears to have been the case for Rev Charles at all the above except for Tartaraghan and Donaghendry.

He and Rev Thomas Staples married two of the three Houston heiresses of Castle Stewart. The Stewart family had sold the majority of their lands in Tyrone to the Houstons of Craigs, Co Antrim, in 1672. Through these marriages, and on the death of John Houston in 1737, the brothers-in-law acquired the Stewart lands and on them together started the mining operations at Coalisland in 1749 in partnership with Primate Arthur Hill. Thomas Staples took over the Rectorship of Ballyclog in 1742, and was also Rector of Derryloran, Cookstown.

The three black Houston martlets are quartered in the coat of arms of this branch of the family with this marriage, and remain so to this day.
