In 1672 joined the 3rd Troop of Guards, rising through the ranks. Made Col in 1701, Brig-Gen in 1705 under Peterborough, acting as Quartermaster to the regiment of horse, in which he rose to become Lt-Colonel in 1708. In 1715 he forced the rebels under Lord Derwentwater to surrender at Preston, thus securing the throne for the reigning family. On 6th July 1716 he was appointed Governor of Minorca, and subsequently commander-in-chief of all forces in Scotland, when he was elevated to the peerage on 29th May 1719 as Baron Carpenter of Killaghy, Co Kilkenny.
