Shared note | Educated by Rev Gilbert Austin and at Trinity College, Dublin. BA 1794. Captain in the Keady Cavalry 1796. MP for Co Armagh 1797-99. Elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy 1799. Captain Armagh Cavalry May 1800. Freedom of the City of Dublin 9th Oct 1800. Following the Act of Union received £15,000 as compensation for the disenfranchisement of the Borough of Charlemont. An Irish representative peer. The last of the Irish Peers elected at the Union of Ireland with Great Britain in 1800, he sat in the House of Lords for 63 years until his death. Created a Knight of the Order of St Patrick on 19 Ocober 1831, as one of the four "extra" Knights nominated by Willam IV at his Coronation. By a Statute of the Order dated 24 January 1833 the number of Knights was permanently increased and these four Knights were absorbed into the regular establishment. Elected a Member of the Privy Council on 13 February 1832. Created Baron Charlemont, of Charlemont Co Armagh, in the peerage of the United Kingdom, with remainder to his brother Henry and his male issue, on 3 January 1837. He continued to sit in the House of Lords an an Earl, where he acted with the Whigs until his death. Lord Lieutenant of Co Tyrone from 1839 and Custos Rotulorum from 1841 to his death. |
