Shared note | Of Donnycarney, Dublin, and Drumboe Castle, Stranorlar, Co Donegal. Fifth son of Martin Basil of Colchester, Essex. Entered Lincoln’s Inn 1628, called to the bar 1636 ; granted the estate of Drumboe in 1642; a bencher of his Inn 1648; acted as a trustee for money raised for the Irish service that year; went to Ireland 1649 as The King’s and then Cromwell’s Attorney General, a post he held until 1659; became a member of the King’s Inns 1650; Chief Justice of the Upper Bench 1659-1660. Acquired the estate of Donnycarney as a bribe in 1653 and built the first Donnycarney House in 1659. The estate was restored to its rightful owners after the Restoration and later purchased by Thomas Adderley and given to his stepson James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont. |
