Fought the Co Armagh by-election against William Brownlow in 1753, taking the side of Speaker Boyle against Primate Stone at the time of the Money Bill dispute. Lost but contested the result, his petition to the House of Commons being defeated 120 to 119. Major of Horse in 1755. Cornet in Lord George Sackville's Reg of Horse 1756. Burgess of Charlemont in 1756. MP for Co Armagh 1758-60. Captain of a Reg of Foot Nov 1758. Freedom of Galway Town 1760. High Sheriff of Co Galway 1764. MP for Charlemont 1761-1775 (1761-1763 with Henry Moore, and 1763-1775 with Sir Annesley Stewart). Major 19th Reg of Dragoons Jul 1761, and recorded as such again in 1768. Portrieve of Charlemont in 1768 and 1770. Left London on 9th November 1775 to take up his seat in the Irish Parliament. He, his wife, and three year old daughter drowned in the wreck of the 'Nonpariel' crossing the Irish Sea from Parkgate. With them were a Miss Matthews, who had been living with a relation of Mrs Caulfeild, and four servants. A newspaper report of the time states that they left one son at an Academy near London, and a daughter living with her grandparents at Eyrecourt in Ireland. On his death, Henry Grattan was returned as MP for Charlemont with Sir Annesley Stewart until 1790. Roxborough, later the seat of the 2nd and 3rd Earls of Charlemont, was built in in 1770 for Hon Francis as MP for Charlemont. |
